Watch the Ball Drop this New Year with Inuvo!

In the United States, New Year’s Eve is celebrated on the last day in December, December 31st and New Year’s Day is celebrated on the first day of January, January, 1st. Bringing in the New Year in the United States is centered around one annual celebration, “The Ball Dropping” in Times Square, New York City. Each year during the New Year’s Eve celebration, a time ball made of Waterford Crystal and electric lights is raised to the top of a pole on the One Times Square building and then lowered to mark the coming of the New Year. The Ball descends 77 feet over the course of a minute, coming to rest at the bottom of its pole at 12:00 am. Every year up to one million people gather in Times Square to watch the Ball drop, and an estimated 1 billion watch the event live on television, 100 million of them in the United States.

In the United States, some of the early colonists fired guns into the air and frequented the local taverns throughout the day on New Year’s Day, January 1st. Others attended church or open houses. Current celebrations include parades such as the Rose Parade in Pasadena, CA, college football bowl games such as the Orange Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, and locally (Tampa, FL) the Outback Bowl.

The New Year is a time of renewal as many people resolve to break bad habits and begin good ones. These resolutions, commonly known as a “New Year’s Resolution”, require people to examine their lives over the last twelve months and plan for the coming year. A New Year's resolution is a commitment to a project or the reforming of a habit, often a lifestyle change that is generally interpreted as a positive change. The name comes from the fact that these commitments normally go into effect on New Year's Day. New Year Resolutions are exclusive and private to the person committing to make one. Resolutions range from donating time, money, clothes, etc. to the less fortunate, to become more organized, or to become more physically fit.
